EU delays online data privacy agreement release
The 15 data protection registrars from each European Union country have asked Microsoft Corp. to make further changes to its Passport online authentication system, according to people familiar with the issue.
Officials concluded a two-day meeting on Wednesday with an agreement on how to respond to offers by Microsoft to bring Passport into line with strict Union privacy laws, but they refused to announce their agreement until later this week, pending its translation from English into French.
Passport is the identification system that allows Internet users easier access to Web sites that operate within Microsoft's .Net platform.
One person at the meeting said on condition of anonymity that Microsoft had offered to make "substantial" changes to Passport. One key problem officials identified with Passport is the way it allows Microsoft to share consumers' personal details gathered at Web sites using .Net. He declined to comment on whether officials agreed to push Microsoft for more concessions than the company has already offered to make.
