Visa, Sony, Infineon tie on IC payment cards
Visa International Inc., Sony Corp. and Infineon Technologies AG have agreed to work together on development and promotion of non-contact smart cards.
The partnership ties credit card company Visa and semiconductor maker Infineon with Sony, which has developed the Felica non-contact card platform that is the basis for electronic cash systems in Hong Kong and Japan and commuter pass systems in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Shanghai.
Sony as well as several major Japanese banks and Visa issuing banks and organizations own stakes in the Felica-based Japanese e-cash system, called Edy.
Full details of the partnership will be announced at a Tokyo news conference on Tuesday afternoon, Visa said Monday.
