Security options

April 6, 2001, 03:29 PM —  Network World —

My company just went through our first security audit. The auditors recommended that we consider providing an additional layer of security for our sensitive information. They suggested we use the technology of smart cards. This requires the user to plug in a card to a workstation as part of the logon requirements. Are there any other options?

-- Via the Internet

The answer is yes. Biometrics has recently gained in popularity. This involves using a device that can either read your fingerprint or your retina. This is used in place of or in addition to your logon name and password.

The advantage of this option is that users only need to remember their logon name. They simply put the designated finger on the scanner or hold the scanner up to their eyes for authentication.

There is nothing wrong with using smart card technology. However, if users lose their cards, they are unable to log on to the network until a new card is assigned to them. For those areas of your company that deal with really sensitive information, you might want to consider using both biometric and smart card systems. Look at the platforms you have and see what authentication options will work the best for your situation.
