Check Point: amazing demand for security appliance
Jerry Ungerman, president of Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., could not find enough superlatives Thursday to express how well the company's new security appliance is selling. High demand could even lead to delivery delays, he said.
"We're shocked at the amazing demand. I think we can sell 10 times more devices than we expected, we're selling them at thousands," said Ungerman in an interview at Check Point's user conference here. "There is a lot of manufacturing capacity, but we are concerned about order backlogs."
Ungerman declined to give actual sales numbers or targets, but said the company will likely provide more details when it presents its first quarter financial results next month.
Check Point, a world leader in sales of firewall and VPN (virtual private network) software, introduced the Safe@Home Pro S-Box security appliance two months ago. The device, targeted at the small and home office market and priced at US$399, acts as a firewall and a VPN client that can initiate VPN sessions with a VPN server. Check Point also offers the Safe@Home S-Box for $299, which has a firewall only.
"Nobody ever realized that they could get Check Point technology at under US$300, it has opened all kinds of usages that we did not think were there," Ungerman said.
For example, a Nordic services company, hoping to increase employee productivity, is planning to buy 12,000 boxes to issue to all of its employees who will then be able to sign on to the corporate network from home in a secure fashion, Ungerman said.
