Microsoft lures Symantec resellers

Last month, Symantec decided to let its biggest customeres buy direct, and also gave SMB customers the option to renew subscriptions directly. Naturally, this had a ripple effect throughout their channel, which does not appreciate being cut out of the loop.

Microsoft is not one to sit still when an opportunity arises, and they are taking advantage of the situation to target Symantec's partners for their own Microsoft Security Software Advisor program.

And now, Symantec gets it all right

It’s refreshing to regale a vendor with kudos for customer service performed expertly. The beneficiary of my admiration today is Symantec.

Symantec gets it all wrong

It’s no fun for any company when its chief operating officer sticks his foot in his mouth or when that same foot is used to kick its resellers in the ass.

The fingerpointing at Symantec continues, in a soap opera-esque quagmire of executives with foot-in-mouth syndrome, PR spin and angry and confused channel partners. Competitors have wasted no time in taking advantage of the situation, and may well succeed in pulling away some of Symantec's best channel partners. The unanswered question is of course, will Symantec care, or will they be glad to see them go?
